Exploration and Discovery are some of my biggest passions. You could say I get out of bed every day because there is always something I want to explore and discover. I have been trying to develop these passions in various ways, such as traveling, reading, photography, music, playing with new technologies and new art, and so on.
It has been on my mind for a long time to combine this passion for exploration and discovery with what I do on a daily basis, which is writing code. Two of the emerging technologies I have recently been getting into has been Virtual Reality / WebVR and 360-degree photography. I wanted to do something with those technologies that would be fun for me as well as allow me to share my joy of exploration and discovery with others.
With that in mind, I have been working on a game I am tentatively calling “Explorer One” (hat tip to “Player One” from the upcoming “Ready Player One” movie). It is still very much a prototype and I have lots of things yet to implement, but it is good enough for people to at least get a sense of what I am talking about.
The following technologies were used in making this game and its content:
- Facebook’s React VR platform (for the app)
- Google Firebase database (for the app)
- Google StreetView app (for taking 360-degree pictures)
- Canon 70D DSLR camera (for taking normal pictures)
- Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens
- PTGui app (for stitching individual pictures into a 360-degree panorama)
- Adobe Lightroom (for touching up the images)
This is work in progress and there is lots more to come, so stay tuned.
